YEAR 3

ENGLISH

Over the course of Year 3 the children work with a large variety of texts:
  - Non-fiction: glossaries, dictionaries, reports, reviews, formal and informal letters.
  - Fiction: poems, rhymes, traditional tales, adventure stories, plays, etc.).
General literacy objectives:
  - Spelling common words.
  - Developing strategies using common word knowledge, letter blends and appreciation of rhyme.
  - Developing skills in identifying keywords and phrases in comprehension questions.
  - Asking and answering questions about a topic and using appropriate texts to find the answers.
  - Structuring answers (written/oral) in full sentences.
  - Grammar work (and correcting Spanglish!!).
  - Using capital letters and correct punctuation (full stops, commas, speech marks, question marks and exclamation marks).
  - Using knowledge of syllables, prefixes and suffixes to extend vocabulary.
  - Using the correct tenses and person.
  - Using a dictionary and thesaurus.
  - Reciting and performing a variety of written work.
  - Using drama to recount a story and express literary ideas.

MATHEMATICS

Number Work.
  - Adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers using mental strategies.
  - Adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers using written strategies.
  - Know multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times-tables.
  - Use the grid method to multiply 2-digit numbers by 3, 4, 5, 6, 10.
  - Comparing, ordering and understanding place value of 2- and 3-digit numbers.
  - Doubling and halving numbers up to 100 using partitioning.
  - Understanding fractions and fractions of numbers. Identify 1/2s, 1/3s, 1/4,s 1/6s, and 1/8s.

Shape, Data and Measure.
  - Name and list simple properties of 2D shapes and 3D shapes.
  - Measure lengths (using millimetres, metres and kilometres), weight (using grams and kilograms) and capacity (using millilitres and litres).
  - Recognise right angles and know they are 90°; understand angles are measured in degrees; recognise ° as the symbol for the measurement of degrees.
  - Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes on analogue and digital clocks.
  - Know and understand the calendar, including days, weeks, months, years.
  - Draw and interpret block graphs and pictograms where one square/symbol represents two units.

SCIENCE

Science is closely taught through experiments carried out by the children. As the year progresses the children have the opportunity to plan and carry out their own experiments related to a topic. Children start to form a concept of ‘fair testing’, variables and how to collect and analysis data.

1st term
Mirror Mirror (Light):
This unit introduces the relationship between light, an object and the formation of shadows. The children carry out experiments to show what happens when light is reflected, and what shadows make the best reflectors.
Opposites Attract (Forces and Magnets):
This unit gives children experience of attraction and repulsion between magnets. They also learn which materials are attracted to magnets, and the different ways magnets are used.

2nd term
Food And Our Bodies (Animals, Including Humans):
Work in this unit reinforces and develops children's knowledge of different food groups and how they make up a balanced diet. We will also be investigating different joints and muscles.
Earth Rocks (Rocks):
In this Unit the class will test and describe the properties of rocks, investigate the way rocks are made and describe how fossils are formed.

3rd term
How Does Your Garden Grow? (Plants)
This unit will give children the opportunity to grow their own plants, and identify and describe the functions of the different parts of flowers. The class will investigate what plants need to grow and stay healthy, as well as the ways some plants spread their seeds.
We Are Astronauts (Space)
The last unit of Year 3 explores the history of the space race. The children will also have the chance to investigate what it takes to be an astronaut and what they need to survive in space.

HISTORY YEAR 3

HISTORY

The Celts and The Romans (1st term)
In this unit, children learn to recognise change over time looking at a timeline. They learn about everyday life in Celtic Britain.

The Romans, also focusing on Boudicca (2nd term)

In this unit, children are introduced to the idea that people from other societies have been coming to settle in Britain for a long time. They consider the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Romans on Britain.

From the Stone Age to the Iron Age (3rd term)

In this Unit we place the Ice Age and early man on a time line and see how early man was different from modern man. We look at how farming changed the Stone Age and look at the importance of Stonehenge. This unit is also linked to our third term Art topic on cave painting.

HISTORY - The Great Fire of London:

  - This unit links an important event beyond living memory in British history, the Great Fire of London, with a famous person, Samuel Pepys.
  - Children develop their sense of chronology and consider why the Great Fire happened, its results and the different ways it is represented.

HISTORY - Florence Nightingale:

  - This unit looks at the life of Florence Nightingale, why she went to Turkey to help soldiers injured in the Crimean War, and what happened as a result of her work.

GEOGRAPHY

The 7 Continents, Atlas Work, World Map Northern and Southern Hemisphere
(1st term)

They learn how to use atlases and globes to identify the seven continents and begin to acquire an understanding of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

Climate and Time Zones (2nd term)

This topic helps children to develop ideas about climates around the world. Children also begin to understand the different time zones around the world.

Weather Stations and Symbols, Our local environment (3rd term)

In this unit, children learn to identify different weather symbols and select appropriate ones for different places and seasons. We also explore some of the features of our local environment.

ART

Focus on an Artist: Pablo Picasso (1st term)
In this unit we study the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and investigate why he is a famous artist.

Portraying Relationships (2nd term)
For this unit the class will identify, discuss and depict relationships within a portrait.

Cave paintings (3rd term)
Work in this unit gives the children the opportunity to use a storyboard to record a sequence of work, and use their own ideas to create cave paintings.

DT

Moving Monsters
We explore how air pressure can be used to produce and control movement, and assemble a simple pneumatic system.
Designing Sandwiches
The children will plan and make a sandwich to fit a healthy eating criteria.
Making a Moon Lander
The last unit is linked to the Science topic We are Astronauts. The children design and build a model Moon Lander for an egg.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The pupils follow a Physical Education Curriculum coherent with the National Curriculum Guidelines for England and Wales.
We believe Physical Education should involve pupils in the continuous process of performing, planning and evaluating. This applies to all areas of activity. Furthermore, the greatest emphasis is always placed on the actual performance aspect of the subject.
Our Key Stage 1 Programme focusses on developing pupil´s basic motor skills and spacial awareness. We aim for pupils to enjoy being active and to grow in confidence within the subject.

LENGUA CASTELLANA Y LITERATURA

Objetivos generales de la asignatura:

    -La comprensión de discursos orales y escritos.
    -expresarse oralmente y por escrito de forma coherente.
    -Utilizar la lectura como fuente de placer, de información y aprendizaje.
Contenidos:

Nuestros alumnos trabajarán cada unidad del programa siguiendo este esquema:
  - Textos narrativos: Desde el cuento que introduce la unidad, trabajamos:
    -La expresión oral.
    -El mecanismo lector (entonación, pausas...).
    -El vocabulario.
  -Gramática: Desarrollo de algunas nociones básicas, como:
    -La palabra y la oración.
    -El sustantivo: nombres de personas, animales y cosas.
    -El adjetivo: cualidades.
    -El verbo: presente,...

  -Ortografía:
    -El uso de mayúsculas.
    -Los signos de interrogación y exclamación.
    -Afianzamiento en el uso de las grafías con dificultad: z/c, c/qu, g/j, r/rr.

  -Escritura:
    -Construcción de textos sencillos desde una propuesta inicial.
    -Narraciones.
    -Descripciones.
    -Textos de la vida cotidiana.
La lectura y memorización de poemas, canciones, adivinanzas y trabalenguas, así como la revisión final de cada unidad, cierran esta programación.

CIENCIAS SOCIALES

En este curso pretendemos que los alumnos identifiquen los elementos del entorno natural y traten de entender que forman parte de una sociedad en la que deben cumplir unas normas comunes partiendo del entorno familiar y escolar. Para ello trabajaremos con los siguientes contenidos:

  - Pueblos y ciudades.
  - El trabajo.
  - El agua y el aire.
  - Temperatura, tiempo y clima.
  - El relieve y los paisajes.
  - El sistema solar, la Tierra, el Sol y la Luna.
  - Nuestro planeta: continentes, mares y océanos.
  - Nuestro país: localización y organización de nuestro territorio.

Para finalizar se realizan actividades de refuerzo, ampliación y fijación de conocimientos. La evaluación será continua.
