A very brief summary of the objectives for Year 3 follow below.
Over the course of Year 3 the children work with a large variety of texts
General literacy objectives:
Spelling common words
Developing strategies using common word knowledge, letter blends and appreciation of rhyme
Developing skills in identifying keywords and phrases in comprehension questions
Asking and answering questions about a topic and using appropriate texts to find the answers
Structuring answers (written/oral) in full sentences
Grammar work (and correcting Spanglish!!)
Using capital letters and correct punctuation (full stops, commas, speech marks, question marks and exclamation marks)
Using knowledge of syllables, prefixes and suffixes to extend vocabulary

Measure lengths (using millimetres, metres and kilometres), weight (using grams and kilograms) and capacity (using millitres and litres).
Recognise right angles and know they are 90°; understand angles are measured in degrees; recognise ° as the symbol for the measurement of degrees.
Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes on analogue and digital clocks.
Know and understand the calendar, including days, weeks, months, years.
Draw and interpret block graphs and pictograms where one square/symbol represents two units.
Science is closely taught through experiments carried out by the children. As the year progresses the children have the opportunity to plan and carry out their own experiments related to a topic. Children start to form a concept of ‘fair testing’, variables and how to collect and analysis data.
1) Mirror Mirror (Light)
This unit introduces the relationship between light, an object and the formation of shadows. The children carry out experiments to show what happens when light is reflected, and what shadows make the best reflectors.
2) Opposites Attract (Forces and Magnets)
This unit gives children experience of attraction and repulsion between magnets. They also learn which materials are attracted to magnets, and the different ways magnets are used.
3) Food And Our Bodies (Animals, Including Humans)
Work in this unit reinforces and develops children's knowledge of different food groups and how they make up a balanced diet. We will also be investigating different joints and muscles.
4) Earth Rocks (Rocks)
In this Unit the class will test and describe the properties of rocks, investigate the way rocks are made and describe how fossils are formed.
5) How Does Your Garden Grow? (Plants)
This unit will give children the opportunity to grow their own plants, and identify and describe the functions of the different parts of flowers. The class will investigate what plants need to grow and stay healthy, as well as the ways some plants spread their seeds.
6) We Are Astronauts (Space)
The last unit of Year 3 explores the history of the space race. The children will also have the chance to investigate what it takes to be an astronaut and what they need to survive in space.
1) The Celts and The Romans
In this unit, children learn to recognise change over time looking at a timeline. They learn about everyday life in Celtic Britain.
2) The Romans, also focusing on Boudicca
In this unit, children are introduced to the idea that people from other societies have been coming to settle in Britain for a long time. They consider the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Romans on Britain.
3) From the Stone Age to the Iron Age
In this Unit we place the Ice Age and early man on a time line and see how early man was different from modern man. We look at how farming changed the Stone Age and look at the importance of Stonehenge. This unit is also linked to our third term art topic on cave painting.
1) The 7 Continents, Atlas Work, World Map Northern and Southern Hemisphere
They learn how to use atlases and globes to identify the seven continents and begin to acquire an understanding of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
2) Climate and Time Zones
This topic helps children to develop ideas about climates around the world. Children also begin to understand the different time zones around the world.
3) Weather Stations and Symbols, Our local environment
In this unit, children learn to identify different weather symbols and select appropriate ones for different places and seasons. We also explore some of the features of our local environment.
1) Focus on an Artist: Pablo Picasso
In this unit we study the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and investigate why he is a famous artist.
For this unit the class will identify, discuss and depict relationships within a portrait.
Work in this unit gives the children the opportunity to use a storyboard to record a sequence of work, and use their own ideas to create cave paintings.
We explore how air pressure can be used to produce and control movement, and assemble a simple pneumatic system.
The children will plan and make a sandwich to fit a healthy eating criteria.
Making a Moon Lander
The last unit is linked to the Science topic We are Astronauts. The children design and build a model Moon Lander for an egg.
Key Stage 1 PE
Here at St. Anne’s School, the pupils follow a Physical Education Curriculum coherent with the National Curriculum Guidelines for England and Wales.
We believe Physical Education should involve pupils in the continuous process of performing, planning and evaluating. This applies to all areas of activity. Furthermore, the greatest emphasis is always placed on the actual performance aspect of the subject.
Our Key Stage One Programme focusses on developing pupil´s basic motor skills and spacial awareness. We aim for pupils to enjoy being active and to grow in confidence within the subject.
St. Anne’s School Events
It is an all day event in which parents are invited to attend. Each pupil from nursery to bachillerato has to participate in at least one activity. Every point gained goes towards an overall House winner.
